Space mission investigates drug treatment for age-related muscle loss
University of Florida College of Pharmacy associate professor Siobhan Malany, Ph.D., sent a tissue-chip experiment to the International Space Station in the fall of 2022 to investigate whether a drug compound made from tomatoes can restore age-related muscle loss. The experiment will help scientists understand how microgravity affects human muscle biology and could lead to new therapies for age-related muscle loss on Earth.

Mission STATEMENT
The mission of the Department of Cellular and Systems Pharmacology is to excel in teaching, research, and service. Our research program aspires to offer a unique perspective on drug development, targeting, and validation via detailed studies of basic physiology, pathophysiology, and drug action in both peripheral and central systems. Work performed in departmental laboratories contributes directly to both the educational and research mission of the university, college and the department as described by the Board of Governors and the University of Florida.
Graduates of our Ph.D. program will be well prepared for a range of careers in academic research, industry, education, and regulatory agencies. Departmental faculty also aspire to excel in professional service in both intramural and extramural capacities. These additional professional activities support the broader research enterprise in the state and nation, contribute to university and college governance, disseminate knowledge and serve the public good.
